The Gospel

Hello friend! We’re glad you’ve made it here if you’re searching for answers, because the Gospel drives everything we do on this blog. In fact, it should drive everything we do, period. Why is that? After reading this article, we hope you’ll understand.

God

This world that we live in was created by a loving but just God. He has all the power and authority in the universe. He sustains everything we can and can’t see. Without Him, we wouldn’t exist, and nothing else would either.

He created this world because He wanted a Creation to interact with. Most importantly, He created us in His image so we could glorify Him. He gave us the instruction to take care of the rest of His Creation and to increase in number and fill the earth.

Sin

God gave the first two humans, Adam and Eve, one command. He placed them in a garden where there were lots of fruit trees and other plants bearing good food to eat. But there was one tree He commanded them not to eat from- the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. He told them that if they ate from it they would die. However, after being tempted by a fallen angel disguised as a serpent, Adam and Eve did eat from that tree. That was when sin came into the world.

Sin is anything we think, say, or do that displeases God. Because God is holy, perfect, and the standard of righteousness, anything that goes against His character is sin. The punishment for sin is death. This is because God is life, so anything that goes against Him is death.

After Adam and Eve, every person was born into a world of sin. This is why we will all face death someday. It also means we can’t have a relationship with God on our own. But God had a plan to redeem His Creation.

Salvation

Soon after Adam and Eve sinned, God promised that He would send a Savior to conquer Satan (the fallen angel who tempted Adam and Eve, he’s the embodiment of evil), sin, and ultimately, death. And God fulfilled His promise! About 5000 years later, God sent His Son Jesus to earth to be our Savior.

Because Jesus was fully God and fully man, He lived a perfect life, enduring temptations like the ones we endure every day, experiencing the pain we experience, but still remaining perfect and faithful to God. Then, when He was about 33, He died on a cross for us. The greatest sorrow and pain we can experience is to be separated from the presence of God. And that’s exactly what Jesus experienced. When God looked down on Jesus while He was hanging on the cross, He did not see His perfect Son, He saw all the sin that had been and would ever be committed. Because God cannot be with sin, He took His presence away from Jesus.

The wonderful news is that three days later, Jesus rose from the dead, defeating death forever! Because Jesus took our sin on, if we believe in Him, we will never have to be separated from the presence of God. This is the greatest news ever! In fact, the word Gospel means good news.

Response

So here’s how you can accept the gift Jesus offers you through the Gospel:

First- You must admit that you are a sinner. You must realize that your actions, your thoughts, and your words stray from God’s character on a consistent basis. You must also make a commitment to turn from that sin. This doesn’t mean you have to be perfect- that’s why Jesus died for you- but God wants a repentant heart.

Second- You must believe in Jesus. This doesn’t just mean that you believe He existed, or even that He died for you and rose from the dead, it means that you believe He is the only way you can have a relationship from God and go to Heaven- and you trust that through Him, you can have those things.

Third- You must confess that Jesus is your Savior. This means that you call yourself a Christian (or a Christ-follower if you prefer that term) and- though this is also included in the first step- you make a commitment to follow Christ. Once again, this does not mean you have to be perfect in any way. It simply means that you decide you are going to follow Christ. The second step- believing in Jesus- is the most important part, not the following part. God cares more about our heart than our actions, so if you open your heart up to God, He will start doing most of the work of cleaning it up and making you a new creation.
