What is a Cupbearer?

Hello friends, and welcome to MYCRO! Hopefully you’ve read our About page and learned just how much this blog- this movement- means to us. We are so excited to help you become a cupbearer. In this article, we’re going to explain exactly what that is.

Being on fire for God is hard

Let me introduce myself. My name is Abigail. Like most of you, I struggle to be on fire for God on a pretty consistent basis. If you’re reading this, you’re probably a teenager (so am I!) in either Gen Z or Gen Alpha. (Don’t ask me which one I’m in, I have no idea. I was born in one of those in-between years they call Gen Zalpha, so I’m kinda a crossbreed). Both generations were born into a very society that is highly infused with technology and social media. Almost everyone we know owns some sort of a mobile phone (even if it’s a flip phone) and many are on some sort of social media platform.

Technology’s influence

Technology has made our world much more fast-paced. Information spreads at a pace unprecedented in human history. So do trends, ideas, and messages of all sorts. And it’s overwhelming! As our brains are developing, we are being bombarded with all of this, and it makes it hard to discern the truth and even do what we’re supposed to be doing sometimes. Personally, I get about 113 notifications a day. But according to a recent Michigan Medicine study, I’m not even close to the average for teens- 240! We don’t often think about this, but even if you had your phone on DND for half the day, that still means you get interrupted in the middle of doing something else that might have been important 120 times a day! No wonder it seems like all of us have ADHD and can’t focus for more than 2 minutes- or less.

Technology can make it hard to be a cupbearer.

And now, in addition to all these focus-zapping notifications and messages being thrown at us from literally everywhere, we’re expected to be on fire for God and live a purposeful life for Him. If it seems impossible, you’re absolutely correct. It’s impossible if you don’t rely on God’s strength, you don’t surround yourself with a godly community, and you don’t put effort in. But- in the midst of all these challenges- there are teens all across the world who are doing this!

Being on fire for God is possible

And that’s what a cupbearer is- somebody who brings the goodness of God to the people around them even when it’s hard.

The phrase “my cup runs over” comes from Psalm 23:5, which says:

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.

Our motivation for bringing the goodness of God to others is that we have experienced it ourselves. God has blessed us with so many things. If you don’t believe that, or if you don’t have a relationship with God in which you’re able to experience His goodness- check out this page

Our cups run over- so we want to share that with others.

Now that you know what a cupbearer is, I hope you want to be one. If so, you can visit this page to learn more.

Being a cupbearer is not just a feeling. It’s a choice. Many teens are so on fire for God that they’re compelled to serve Him. But feelings fade. So right now, wherever you are, I want you to commit to being a cupbearer no matter what you feel like and no matter what obstacles get in your way.
If you’ve decided to be a cupbearer, let us know in the comments below! You can also reach out to us via email at [email protected]. Welcome to the movement, cupbearer!
